According to a leak, a new Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti for laptops is on the way

AIDA64, FinalWire’s diagnostic and benchmarking software, has just been updated to version 6.60. The current version adds preliminary support for Intel’s next-generation Raptor Lake CPUs and Nvidia’s yet-to-be-announced top-of-the-line graphics processor for mobile PCs, thereby confirming the green company’s plans to release the anticipated GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU. We don’t have precise specifications for either of these yet, but if you get your hands on an early sample, AIDA64 should be able to tell you what it is.

The AIDA64 v6.60 release from FinalWire includes a number of new features, including AVX-512 and AVX2 accelerated benchmarks for Intel’s Alder Lake processors (which do not officially support AVX-512). It also supports Raptor Lake processors, as well as preliminary support for the next-generation Meteor Lake CPUs, which are expected to arrive in around two years. An AVX accelerated benchmark for different Zhaoxin and Hygon C86 Mukti/Dhyana processors is also included in the current version of the utility.

While improved support for Intel’s Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs, as well as Chinese CPUs, is welcome, the confirmation of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for laptops is particularly intriguing.

Nvidia’s GA102 and RTX 3080 Ti GPUs Will Be Available in Laptops
Nvidia is said to be working on new Ti-branded GeForce RTX GPUs for desktops with greater VRAM. It now appears that new GeForce RTX 30-series Ti products for laptops will be released in the near future. What’s more intriguing, according to the press release, is that a new GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be available for laptops.

“GPU information for nVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 12GB and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop,” the notes indicate. They don’t mention whether the GPU will be based on Nvidia’s GA104 (with up to 6144 CUDA cores) or the GA102 (with up to 512 CUDA cores) (with up to 10752 CUDA cores). However, because Nvidia already has the GA104-powered GeForce RTX 3080 for laptops with 6144 CUDA cores, upgrading the GPU with faster speeds or additional VRAM may not make sense. What appears to be more plausible is that Nvidia will deploy the GA102, which is far bigger and more power demanding, in a configuration suitable for high-end gaming laptops.

The GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and GeForce RTX 3080 are the only desktop graphics cards that employ Nvidia’s GA102. While all of these chips demand 320W or more, Nvidia might lower the speeds and perhaps convert to GDDR6 memory (rather than GDDR6X) to fit the chip into a mobile profile. The GPU power in the most powerful notebooks reaches around 150W, so such a configuration should be possible. It would also allow mobile PCs to reach hitherto unattainable performance levels. Of course, this would have an influence on battery life, but for desktop replacement laptops, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Take this information with a grain of salt until Nvidia confirms its plans to release the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for laptops. However, because AIDA64 isn’t known for releasing erroneous information, we’re confident that the GPU will appear in laptops in the coming months.
